This afternoon, Apple announced that they sold 8,111,000 iPods during their third quarter (April – June). This marks a 32 percent increase over the same quarter last year. Apple’s overall net profit for the quarter was $472 million on sales of $4.37 billion ($1.4 billion of which was generated by the iPod), and was the second highest quarterly revenue in the company’s history. Apple’s “Other Music Products,” including the iTunes Music Store and iPod accessories, brought in $457 million — a 90 percent increase year-over-year.

In a statement after the announcement, Steve Jobs said, “The iPod continued to earn a US market share of over 75 percent and we are extremely excited about future iPod products in our pipeline.”
